Are you familiar with these lyrics?

Indeed, the Hallyu or the Korean wave has struck the Philippines. First, Koreanovelas invaded our country with their beautiful stories of love, friendship, compassion and many others. Aside from that, Koreanovelas featured good-looking guys whom the girls, especially teenagers loved so much.

Korean Pop, K-Pop in short, is now conquering the Philippines. It had begun throughout the early 1990’s and it said to be greatly influenced by the Japanese popular music. Today, K-Pop is alike to American pop music, with hip hop, dance, and R&B as famous genres.

K-Pop is mostly presented by young boy or girl groups, demonstrating awesome dance moves high style and the latest looks. These groups continue to top the Philippine charts with their songs. Super Junior, often referred to as SuJu or SJ is one of these groups. Having thirteen members, it is considered as the largest boy band in the world today. Another one is the Girls’ Generation, a girl group with nine members. It is usually referred to as SNSD, the acronym of its Korean name So Nyeo Shi Dae or So Nyuh Shi Dae and it is said to be the female counterpart of Super Junior. Wonder Girls, the all-female quintet behind the worldwide dance craze, “Nobody”, is also a Korean girl group. Big Bang, a five-member male group, is also known for their upbeat songs, hip hop and R&B styles and for their cool street dancing. 2NE1, the female version of Big Bang, consists of four members, with one of them a Philippine celebrity, Sandara Park. They became popular as their debut song, “Fire” was released. It gained 2 million views on its release date.

K-Pop is often sung in Korean, with some lines in English strategically used to attract attention. At first, K-Pop songs may annoy Filipino listeners since it is in Korean, a language unfamiliar to our nation. Despite this, they depict nice messages that we can relate to in our daily lives.

“I don't care, I'll stop caring about what you're doing wherever you are
From now on I really don't care, I'll get out of the way
From now on don't come to me and cry, and cling on
cause I don't care e e e e e
I don't care e e e e e”
- “I don’t Care” by 2NE1

“Oh I don't care what anyone says
No matter who curses at me, I'll only look at you
If I am born again, it will still be only you
(Tic Toc Tic Toc) Even as time goes by”
- “It’s You” by Super Junior
