On the spot recycled art contest

by: Jeremy Bryan D. Marron IV- St. Aloysius Gonzaga

In the celebration of the annual Ecology week, the Philippine Council for Peace and Global Education (PCPGE) conducted different interschool activities to convey its theme “The Youth: Hope of the Environment”.

Last September 24, 2009, the on-the-spot recycled art contest was held in Marist School, its host school. Representatives from Cainta Catholic College were: Ma. Czarina Asuncion, Winnie Joy Eliab, Jeremy Bryan D. Marron (IV-St.-Aloysius Gonzaga), Rhoniel Anthony Brondo (IV-St. Albert the Great) and Carmela (II-St. Agustine of Hippo) participated and showed their prowess in making a recycled art out of recyclable materials under time pressure. Materials such as tin cans, newspapers, tanzans, straws, plastic bottles were given by the host school. At exactly 2:00 p.m., the contest officially started and the ten participating schools started to work on their art. Each team has been given ninety minutes to finish the recycled art. Some teams started to panic when there were only a few minutes left to finish and present their work.

When the time was up, the participating teams stopped and arranged their things. Later on, they were entertained by a live band from the host school. Judges interviewed each participant and let them explain their masterpiece. After tallying the scores, the judges declared the winners: St. Scholastica in first place and Pasig Catholic College in second place. The entry from Cainta Catholic College was a sculpture portraying the innovation through three R’s to convey to the viewers that citizens can also be progressive and innovative through the use of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. People, especially the youth, must learn how to become resourceful to uplift mother nature.
